Visiting Northern Colorado--Fields of Wildflowers!

We looped through the mountains of northern Colorado and southern Wyoming this last week (June 28-July 3 2015). In May the snowfall in this area was particularly heavy, resulting in a relatively late snowmelt and an abundance of water for wildflowers.

The number and diversity of plants in flower was amazing. I was delighted! Fields of flowers refresh my soul.

These photos were taken the junction of Colorado Routes 14 and 40 and on the Rabbit Ears Pass Trial along Route 40. Both locations are above the Poudre Valley, between Fort Collins and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Southern Wyoming was in full bloom as well.

Even though there is a breath-taking riot of flowers, the flowering season has not peaked. There are many plants still getting ready to flower
, their buds not even showing color. In particular, the fireweed has not yet bloomed (green shoots in the photo below).

Which isn't to say the current display isn't gorgeous and dramatic. An ever-changing tapestry of color.

This could be you, walking amid the flowers!

A wonderful year, go and see!
